Kate grew up sailing on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway. This ecologically rich region formed early frameworks for her art. She studied art and environmental geology at the University of Vermont. Her compositions visually dispatch ecological, social and global concepts linked to the Anthropocene, our present geologic era defined by human influences. Kate’s work has revealed ideas about mineral extraction, avian migration patterns and land use. More recent series have explored wind power, climate change and the life cycle of frozen/unfrozen water. She has twenty years of experience as an artist-teacher. Kate works in analog and digital photography, drawing, painting and installation. As an artist and naturalist she relies on the data collected during site visits to ground her studio practice. Her expeditions have included remote time in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and Svalbard as well as passages on the Great Lakes, the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. A longtime affinity for cartography informs her quality of line, aerial evaluation and series formats. Kate lives in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York.
